Understanding Prayer and Fasting

Day 3: The Spirit of Prayers

The essence of prayer is the sincere concern and yearning for something. It is the trust we have in God for an answer. This heartfelt concern is what true prayer is all about and holds great power. Throughout his life, Christ carried this burden. It was so heavy that it caused him deep sadness, and he prayed, "Abba, Father, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not my will, but your will." (Mark 14:36 NIV) The "cup" refers to the suffering, not the sacrifice. (Matthew 20:22-23 NIV) He came to Earth for that sacrifice. This burden caused him such distress that his sweat was like drops of blood while praying. (Luke 22:44 NIV)
